Bawumia Concedes as Early Results Show Mahama Leading in Ghana’s 2024 Elections

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has officially conceded defeat to former President John Dramani Mahama as early results from Ghana’s December 7 presidential and legislative elections reveal a decisive lead for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate.

Mahama is projected to win approximately 52.7% of the vote, compared to Bawumia’s 40.1% for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), marking a significant margin of victory for the former president.

These early outcomes mirror pre-election surveys that consistently favored Mahama. A poll conducted by Global InfoAnalytics from October 28 to November 2, 2024, forecasted a decisive victory for the NDC leader, with Bawumia lagging by nearly 20 percentage points.

The election took place against the backdrop of Ghana’s worst economic crisis in decades, defined by soaring inflation, widespread unemployment, and mounting public dissatisfaction.

While voter turnout was notably low, Mahama’s commanding lead underscores public discontent and a strong desire for political change. Official results from the Electoral Commission are expected to be announced shortly.
