Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang: Ghana’s Historic First Female Vice President

Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has made history as Ghana’s first female Vice President, a groundbreaking achievement that highlights her exceptional dedication to education, leadership, and public service. Running alongside John Mahama in the 2024 presidential elections, her victory represents a transformative moment in Ghana’s political history and a beacon of inspiration for women across Africa.

Academic Trailblazer and Leadership Pioneer

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s remarkable journey began in academia, where she distinguished herself as a scholar and leader. She became the first woman to serve as Vice-Chancellor of a public university in Ghana, leading the University of Cape Coast (UCC) from 2008 to 2012. Her tenure was marked by innovation and progress, earning her Ghana’s highest civilian honor, the Officer of the Order of the Volta, for Academic Distinction.

At UCC, she held various leadership roles, including Head of the English Department, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and founding Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research. Her influence extended internationally, serving as Academic Director for the School for International Training, where she promoted African Diaspora history and culture.

Impactful Political Career

Transitioning from academia to politics, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang served as Ghana’s Minister for Education during John Mahama’s presidency. In this role, she spearheaded significant reforms to enhance educational access and quality, leaving an indelible mark on the sector.

Her political journey reached a historic milestone when she became John Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 elections, a first for a woman in Ghana’s major political parties. After their decisive victory in the 2024 polls, she shattered another glass ceiling as Vice President, cementing her legacy as a champion for women in leadership.

Global Recognition

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang’s influence extends beyond Ghana. She served as Ghana’s representative to UNESCO’s Executive Board, earning re-election for a second term. In 2007, she was among five distinguished scholars invited to address the United Nations Headquarters during the bicentennial commemoration of the abolition of slavery.

Educational Excellence and Honors

Her academic journey is equally inspiring. She holds a Diplôme Supérieure d’Études Françaises from the University of Dakar, a B.A. (Hons) and Diploma in Education from UCC, and both a Master’s and Doctorate from York University, Canada. A two-time Fulbright scholar, she is a Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Commonwealth of Learning.
