Ghana Armed Forces Backs Police for December 7 Elections

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has announced the deployment of personnel to support the Ghana Police Service (GPS) in ensuring a peaceful and orderly environment during the December 7 Presidential and Parliamentary elections.

In a press release dated December 7, signed by Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, Director-General of Public Relations, the GAF clarified its role in the upcoming electoral process.

“The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) wishes to inform the public that the deployment of its personnel to designated locations in support of the Ghana Police Service for the peaceful conduct of the upcoming 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections is ongoing,” the statement read.

To allay public concerns, the GAF assured citizens that no military personnel would be stationed at polling stations. Instead, their role will remain as standby support, with the GPS retaining primary responsibility for election security.

“The military will only be deployed upon request by the GPS. This collaborative approach ensures that the elections proceed smoothly and peacefully while maintaining law and order,” Brigadier General Aggrey-Quashie noted.

The Armed Forces further urged Ghanaians to exercise their civic duties responsibly, cooperate with security personnel, and avoid any actions that could compromise peace during the elections.

“GAF reiterates its commitment to safeguarding the stability and sovereignty of the nation whilst protecting the integrity of the electoral process,” the statement concluded.

This coordinated effort between the military and police underscores a shared commitment to upholding peace and security during one of Ghana’s most critical democratic exercises.
