“Ghana First”: National Film Authority Champions Local Content with New Campaign

The National Film Authority (NFA) has launched an ambitious “Sell Ghana to Ghana” campaign to coincide with Ghana Cinema Week 2024, scheduled from December 14 to 22. This initiative aims to celebrate and promote Ghanaian-made films, animations, and games, encouraging citizens to embrace local creativity and strengthen the domestic creative economy.

Ghanaian filmmakers have made significant strides this year, producing a range of high-quality movies. The NFA is urging audiences to take pride in and support their work. “We have some really well-done films made by Ghanaian filmmakers this year. Let’s take time to see them,” the Authority stated.

In addition to cinema, the campaign highlights the underutilized potential of Ghana’s animation and gaming industries. Despite spending over $60 million on mobile games in 2022, most Ghanaians are unfamiliar with locally produced content.

“Hardly any of the Ghanaian games and animation is watched or played by Ghanaians,” the NFA noted, emphasizing the need to redirect this financial outflow back into the local economy. By encouraging Ghanaians to consume locally made animations and games, the campaign seeks to create jobs, foster cultural pride, and position Ghana as a leader in Africa’s creative sector.

The NFA has also urged cinemas and gaming centers to prominently feature Ghanaian-made content, stating, “It’s time Ghanaian animation and games are played by Ghanaians and shared across Africa.”

A major highlight of this year’s Cinema Week is “CINEKIDS,” a family-focused event featuring curated Ghanaian films, animations, and games designed for young audiences. Running from December 14 to 22, this initiative aims to inspire the next generation by connecting them with their cultural roots through entertainment.

“If you are a parent, make sure to bring your kids,” the NFA urged, expressing excitement over the opportunities this event creates for children and families alike.

The “Sell Ghana to Ghana” campaign represents a strategic push to strengthen Ghana’s creative industries while cultivating a sense of national pride. By keeping cultural and economic benefits within the country, the initiative supports sustainable growth for local talent.

“While it’s great to sell Ghana to the world, for now, let’s SELL GHANA TO GHANA,” the NFA concluded, calling on all Ghanaians to support the local creative industry during this year’s Ghana Cinema Week.
