Egyptian-American Comedian Bassem Youssef to Perform in South Africa for the First Time in February 2025

Bassem Youssef, the celebrated Egyptian-American comedian and satirist, will make his South African debut in February 2025. The 50-year-old will perform as part of his solo comedy tour, The Middle Beast Tour, presented by Blu Blood in collaboration with the Gift of the Givers Foundation.

Youssef’s performances will kick off at the Durban ICC on February 7, followed by a show at the Cape Town International Convention Centre on February 8, and concluding at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg on February 9.

The Middle Beast Tour offers audiences a unique opportunity to experience Youssef’s personal journey—from his early career as a heart surgeon in Egypt to his pivotal role during the Arab Spring, culminating in hosting the largest political satire show in the Arab world’s history.

Known as “The Egyptian Jon Stewart,” Youssef has earned international acclaim for his sharp wit and political commentary. Despite his success, his life has been marked by turbulence, including being arrested and interrogated in Egypt, which eventually led him to relocate to the United States.

“We are thrilled to host Bassem Youssef’s inaugural South African tour. His ability to bridge cultures through humor and storytelling, while addressing complex social and political issues, has made him a compelling global voice,” said Osman Osman and Shaista Khan Osman, Managing Director and CEO of Blu Blood, in a joint statement. “We’re confident that his show will resonate with South African audiences, offering both humor and insightful perspectives.”

Youssef’s career highlights include hosting Al Bernameg, the first political satire show in the Middle East, which transitioned from a five-minute YouTube segment to a television sensation with 30 million weekly viewers. His work earned him numerous accolades, including a spot on Time magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2013, under the “Pioneers” category. He was also awarded the International Press Freedom Award by the Committee to Protect Journalists and named a Global Thinker by Foreign Policy magazine in the same year.

Currently, Youssef continues to perform his one-man show globally and has appeared in various productions such as Netflix’s MO, Ramy, Lioness, and Upload. His October 2023 interview with Piers Morgan holds the record for the most-viewed episode of Piers Morgan Uncensored.
