Bollywood Icon Shah Rukh Khan’s Triumphant Return: “It’s Good to Be Back”

Bollywood legend Shah Rukh Khan made a victorious comeback, telling fans, “It’s good to be back,” after winning the Best Actor award at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards.

Khan’s remark refers to his return to cinema in 2023, following a four-year hiatus. “I think I received a little happiness from the audience this year because I worked again after a long time,” he shared with the star-studded crowd in Abu Dhabi.

A household name in India and one of its most celebrated stars worldwide, Khan won the award for his role in the action-packed thriller Jawan. Not only was he honored with the top prize, but he also co-hosted the event in the capital of the United Arab Emirates, a city known for its large Indian diaspora.

Fireworks greeted Khan as he stepped on stage, with the entire event offering multiple tributes to his illustrious career. “I love awards, I’m greedy about awards,” he joked. “I just want to tell you—it’s good to be back.”

Khan’s return to the silver screen has been hailed as Bollywood’s biggest success story of 2023. Alongside Jawan, he also starred in the spy-action film Pathaan. Both roles presented a new side of the actor, as he took on rugged, action-hero personas—an exciting shift for the 58-year-old, who has spent over three decades captivating audiences as a romantic lead.

The superstar’s comeback follows a period of personal and professional challenges, including his son Aryan Khan’s wrongful arrest on drug possession charges (which were later dropped) and several box-office disappointments. Despite these setbacks, Khan’s break from the spotlight hasn’t affected his immense popularity. Often referred to as Bollywood’s “most important cultural export,” millions of fans affectionately call him “King Khan” or the “King of Bollywood.”

The event also featured other Bollywood megastars, including Rani Mukerji, Anil Kapoor, and Bobby Deol. Mukerji won Best Actress for her role in Mrs. Chatterjee vs Norway, while Vidhu Vinod Chopra was awarded Best Director for 12th Fail. Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal took home six awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor for Anil Kapoor.

Bollywood, India’s dominant film industry, continues to produce hundreds of films annually, enjoying a dedicated global fan base. However, the pandemic dealt a heavy blow to the industry, with cinema closures forcing many to switch to streaming platforms. Though 2024 has been slow, the return of stars like Shah Rukh Khan in 2023 brought much-needed momentum back to the industry.

This marked the third time Abu Dhabi hosted the IIFA Awards, with the event spanning three days. Renowned filmmaker Karan Johar, who co-hosted the ceremony with Khan, was also honored with a special award celebrating his 25years in cinema.
