Sonnie Badu Opens Up About Battling Depression in the U.S.

Renowned Ghanaian/ International preacher and gospel artist, Sonnie Badu has shared his emotional journey through a severe battle with depression while living in the United States.
During a candid interview with Asempa FM, Badu revealed that he spent countless hours isolated in his office, overwhelmed by his struggles and consumed by his thoughts. The situation became so intense that he even contemplated self-harm.
“I battled depression for almost six months,” he recounted. “There were times I would stay in my office for 12 hours straight, with the lights off, not wanting to talk to anyone. It got so bad that thoughts of harming myself crossed my mind once or twice.”
However, the gospel artist credited the thought of his six young children as a source of strength during those dark times. “Thinking about my children made it hard to give in. They are still so young, and I kept worrying about what would happen to them if I wasn’t around. That’s what gave me hope.”
Badu further acknowledged the immense financial pressure he faced, noting that the burden of paying bills, especially after purchasing a house, added to the weight of his struggles. But amid it all, he found solace in prayer, laying hands, and seeking counseling.
He also expressed gratitude to Reverend Eastwood Anaba, who played a pivotal role in his recovery. According to Badu, God revealed his struggles to Rev. Anaba, who then provided the guidance and support needed to help him overcome his depression. “Rev. Eastwood was the one God used to redeem me,” Badu shared.
The artist’s vulnerability in discussing his mental health challenges serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of seeking help and leaning on faith during difficult times.
