Akufo-Addo approves visa-free entry to Ghana for all African nationals

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially approved a groundbreaking policy granting visa-free entry to Ghana for citizens of all African nations. This initiative fulfills a pledge made during the Africa Prosperity Dialogues (APD 2024) in January and underscores Ghana’s commitment to enhancing continental integration.

The executive approval, issued on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, paves the way for the policy’s implementation before the end of Akufo-Addo’s tenure on January 6, 2025. Once enacted, Ghana will join Rwanda, Seychelles, The Gambia, and Benin as the only African nations offering unrestricted access to all African passport holders.

This policy aligns with the African Union’s vision of fostering economic integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Ghana, as the host of the AfCFTA Secretariat, has long championed a borderless Africa, echoing the ideals of its first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

President Akufo-Addo, speaking at the APD 2024 under the theme “Developing Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add Value, and Trade,” reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to this bold initiative. “Many of you had to acquire a visa to attend this event,” he noted, referencing special arrangements to reduce visa fees for participants. He assured attendees that Ghana was on track to introduce visa-free travel for all Africans within the year.

The policy has been communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration and the Ministry of the Interior, which have begun preparations for its rollout. The Ghana Immigration Service is expected to announce the official start date, likely to be January 1, 2025.

The initiative is poised to boost business, tourism, and cultural exchange across the continent. It also positions Ghana as a leader in African unity and integration, setting a progressive example for other nations.

The policy tackles long-standing criticisms of restrictive immigration practices within Africa. Business magnate Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest individual, has frequently voiced frustration over the burdensome visa requirements for intra-African travel. “As an investor, I have to apply for 35 different visas,” he lamented at a recent business forum in Rwanda.

Ghana’s visa-free policy not only simplifies travel for entrepreneurs and investors but also reflects the country’s leadership in advancing the AU’s agenda for seamless mobility and cooperation across Africa.

By adopting this policy, Ghana reinforces its legacy as a champion of Pan-Africanism. While countries like Ethiopia, home to the African Union headquarters, have faced criticism for restrictive visa policies, Ghana’s initiative sets a high standard, reaffirming its commitment to unity, prosperity, and integration on the continent.
