Mfantsipim Triumphs in Dramatic Comeback, Secures Third NSMQ Trophy Over AUGUSCO and KETASCO

In a thrilling finale to the 2024 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), Mfantsipim School clinched its third championship title in dramatic fashion. Affectionately known as “Botwe,” Mfantsipim stunned the audience in the final moments of the contest, overtaking St. Augustine’s College with a decisive riddle answer that granted them a narrow lead.

St. Augustine’s College (AUGUSCO) had maintained a slim lead until the fifth and final round, where they ultimately fell behind as Mfantsipim surged forward. By the end, Mfantsipim had amassed 47 points, narrowly edging out AUGUSCO’s 46 points, while Keta Senior High School (KETASCO) followed with 32 points.

In addition to the NSMQ trophy, Mfantsipim earned a cash prize of GHC10,000, sponsored by Pepsodent, as the highest-scoring team of the day.
This victory adds to Mfantsipim’s previous NSMQ titles won in 1999 and 2014. Botwe has appeared in five finals since the quiz began and has finished as runner-up twice, in 2000 and 2016.
St. Augustine’s College, aiming for its third title after wins in 2007 and 2019, fell just short in this intense showdown. Meanwhile, KETASCO, the reigning Volta-Oti Zonal champions, returned to the finals with high hopes. Although they rallied with two correct answers in the fifth round to close their score gap slightly, they ultimately finished in third place.
With such a close and competitive finale, the 2024 NSMQ will be remembered for Mfantsipim’s remarkable comeback and the intense rivalry among these top schools.
