“Celebrate Our Own”: Buju Banton on Importance of Caribbean Music Awards

Reggae and dancehall legend Buju Banton delivered a heartfelt message at the Caribbean Music Awards 2025, stressing the need for a dedicated platform that honors Caribbean culture and the artists who have shaped it.

Speaking with Billboard correspondent Kyle Denis and Love Island USA host Chelley Bissainthe on the red carpet, Banton explained why the event carries such weight for him and the wider Caribbean community.

“It means a whole lot because it’s important for us to have a platform where we can celebrate our culture, celebrate the style awards, and the great ones who have been contributing to the culture for years,” Banton said.

He acknowledged that Caribbean artists often feel overlooked on international stages, noting that resentment can arise when their contributions go unrecognized. Events like the Caribbean Music Awards, he said, change that narrative.

“This epitomizes what the culture is truly about—from various regions, not only Jamaica, but the whole Caribbean and other genres as well,” he added.

Banton emphasized the need for self-determined recognition, encouraging the Caribbean to continue “carving out space” for its own celebrations rather than relying on outside platforms.

“I love what you said about us carving out space for ourselves and not looking for validation elsewhere, but building our own award shows,” he said.

Attending the Caribbean Music Awards for the first time, Banton described the experience as “serene,” noting his pride in being part of a moment that unites artists from reggae, dancehall, soca, calypso, and other genres under one banner.

The awards, staged in New York City, highlighted not only individual achievements but also the collective spirit of a region whose music continues to influence the world.
