Rocky Dawuni: “My Grammy Nominations Are Built on Hard Work, Not Connections”

Ghanaian music icon Rocky Dawuni, now a four-time Grammy nominee, has firmly stated that his achievements are a result of relentless hard work and dedication rather than industry connections. Speaking on Onua Showtime, Dawuni shared insights into his journey as an artist, emphasizing the challenges he faced in carving a path for African music on the global stage.

Overcoming Barriers as an African Artist

Recalling his early days as an emerging musician in the United States, Dawuni described a time when opportunities for African artists were scarce. Despite these limitations, he refused to be discouraged. Instead, he took matters into his own hands, founding Afrofunky, a Los Angeles-based music club that became a cultural phenomenon. Over its decade-long run, the club not only celebrated African music but also hosted legendary artists like Prince and Stevie Wonder, establishing itself as a haven for musical innovation and cross-cultural collaboration.

Authenticity and Hard Work: The Keys to Success

Dawuni credits his Grammy nominations to his unwavering commitment to authenticity and excellence in his craft. Reflecting on his career, he stressed the importance of perseverance and passion over networking or relying on industry connections. “It’s not about who you know,” Dawuni remarked, “but the effort you put into perfecting your craft.”

A Grammy Legacy

Rocky Dawuni’s Grammy journey began in 2015 with a nomination for his album Branches of the Same Tree in the Best Reggae Album category. In 2022, his album Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1 earned a nomination for Best Global Music Album, further solidifying his position as a global ambassador for African music.

This year, Dawuni is competing in the Best Global Music Performance category at the 2025 Grammy Awards with his song Rise. The category features stiff competition, including works by Angélique Kidjo & Soweto Gospel Choir (Sunlight to My Soul), Arooj Aftab (Raat Ki Rani), and Sheila E. featuring Gloria Estefan & Mimy Succar (Bemba Colorá).

Inspiring the Next Generation

Dawuni’s achievements continue to inspire artists across the globe, especially those representing African music and culture. His journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience and authenticity in breaking barriers and achieving excellence on the world stage.
