EC “Fully Ready” for December 7 Elections – Bossman Asare

The Electoral Commission (EC) is not just prepared but “fully ready” to conduct the upcoming December 7 elections, according to Dr. Bossman Asare, the Deputy Chairman in charge of Corporate Services.

Speaking on Joy News’ PM Express on November 19, Dr. Asare expressed confidence in the Commission’s readiness, highlighting significant milestones achieved ahead of schedule.

“With 18 days to go, I wouldn’t only say we are ready; we are fully ready,” he declared. “There are key tasks that must be accomplished before the elections, and we are well ahead of schedule. By December 2 for special voting and December 7 for the main elections, we will be fully prepared. I believe the good people of Ghana are equally ready.”

Progress on Key Preparations

Dr. Asare outlined several critical steps taken by the Commission, including the printing and distribution of ballot papers.

“As of now, over 50% of the ballot papers have reached the regional capitals under the supervision of the Regional Police,” he stated. He further disclosed that the training of election officials is progressing smoothly. “We’ve completed the national-level training, are set to begin at the regional level, and will soon proceed to the constituency level.”

According to Dr. Asare, the EC’s meticulous planning has ensured that even an earlier election date would not disrupt their preparations. “If the elections were to be held next week, we would still be ready,” he confidently noted.

Challenges in Ahafo and Volta Regions

Dr. Asare admitted to minor challenges in the Ahafo and Volta regions related to ballot paper serial numbers. However, he assured the public that these issues were being swiftly addressed.

“Due to some discrepancies with serial numbers, we decided to reprint the affected ballot papers at a different facility. We have strong evidence that this task will be completed this week, allowing us to distribute the materials to the regions promptly,” he explained.

Ballot Distribution Near Completion

Dr. Asare revealed that nearly 90% of the work on ballot distribution has been finalized. He also noted an unexpected development regarding the presidential ballot papers following the passing of the Ghana Freedom Party flagbearer, Akua Donkor.

“By the time of her unfortunate passing, over 90% of the presidential ballots had been printed. Once the embargo was lifted, we were able to make swift progress, ensuring completion within the same week,” he said.

Assurance to Ghanaians

Reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to a smooth electoral process, Dr. Asare assured Ghanaians of the EC’s dedication.

“We have a comprehensive plan in place. Based on our progress, I can confidently say we are fully ready. The Electoral Commission is working tirelessly to deliver a seamless and successful election on December 7,” he concluded.
