The stage is set in Cape Coast, Ghana’s education stronghold, for an intense showdown as the three finalists of the 2024 National Science and Mathematics Quiz (NSMQ) clash today. Mfantsipim School, Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS), and St. Augustine’s College will compete head-to-head for the prestigious NSMQ title, along with all the accolades and bragging rights that come with it.
A Battle for the Crown

Keta Senior High Technical School (SHTS)
Keta SHTS has established itself as a formidable force in recent years, impressing audiences and making significant strides on the NSMQ stage. In 2021, Keta reached the final, thrilling viewers with its performance. This year, the team—led by the talented trio of Perpetual Sefakor Gakpetor, Clinton Edem Adorsoo, and Frederick Adjavor Sowalo—has powered through heavyweights like Achimota School to secure a spot in the finale. Keta SHTS is hungry for its first title and is determined to leave a lasting mark.
St. Augustine’s College
St. Augustine’s College enters this final with a history of success, having last won the NSMQ in 2019. Known for clinching the title each time they reach the finals, the “Augusco” team is eager to reclaim the trophy. This year, they’ve overcome tough opponents, including Wesley Girls’ High School, Ghana National College, Bishop Herman College, and St. Hubert Seminary, proving their capability and fueling their drive for victory.
Mfantsipim School
Mfantsipim School, widely regarded as “The Only School” by its supporters, is back with a mission to end a 10-year drought. The team’s impressive journey includes a monumental victory over reigning champions, Presbyterian Boys, in the semi-finals. The spirit among Mfantsipim’s students and alumni is high, as they rally behind their team, hoping to see the NSMQ trophy return to their alma mater.
The Legacy of the NSMQ
Launched in 1993 by Primetime Limited, the National Science and Mathematics Quiz has grown into Ghana’s premier academic competition, sparking an interest in STEM among senior high school students. From its beginnings as a televised quiz in Accra, the NSMQ has captivated viewers nationwide, showcasing fierce intellectual competition among the nation’s top schools.
This year’s event is especially significant, as it marks the first time the NSMQ is being hosted in Cape Coast. Known for its rich educational history, Cape Coast provides the perfect backdrop for this battle of brilliance, allowing audiences in the region to experience the excitement live.
With a record 157 schools entering the 2024 competition and 126 vying for spots in the preliminary stages, the NSMQ continues to be a platform of academic excellence and friendly rivalry.
