Basketmouth Warns Aspiring Creatives: Don’t Be Fooled by Social Media Illusions

Nigerian comedian and filmmaker Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, recently shared insights on the challenges of social media fame during an appearance on the CreativiTEA podcast, advising aspiring creatives to focus on building meaningful brands.

Basketmouth warned against the lure of instant fame, emphasizing the importance of brand identity and longevity over fleeting popularity. “A lot of people are blinded by the desire just to be famous,” he noted. “But what about your brand equity? Can you sustain what you’ve generated in two weeks for twenty years?”

The comedian criticized the trend of using controversy as a quick route to fame, cautioning that it rarely yields lasting success. “Bad publicity is bad publicity, regardless. People get deceived because it seems to work for others, but don’t be fooled by what you see on social media—it’s mostly fake,” he stressed. “They’re trying to make you chase a mirage, and after a few weeks, the buzz fades.”

In a heartfelt message to up-and-coming talents, Basketmouth underscored the importance of authenticity and warned against compromising one’s values for short-term attention. “Don’t sell your brand for two weeks of fame. Remember, you’ll have a legacy, a family, and a future,” he urged.

Reflecting on his personal journey, Basketmouth spoke candidly about his own struggles and the importance of inner peace. “There were times disappointments weighed me down, but joy within keeps you going. You can be in debt and still have joy—it’s essential to find that peace,” he said.

He advised a practical approach to cultivating joy, encouraging listeners to pray for positivity. “Ask God for joy each day. When you radiate that positive energy, it impacts everything around you.”

The comedian concluded with an empowering reminder: “We humans are like gods. The faith you have is your superpower—use it. When you wake up feeling joy and peace, that’s your moment to create and make a difference.”
