Spotted: Sarkodie

Michael Owusu Addo, professionally known as Sarkodie (born July 10, 1985), is a renowned Ghanaian rapper, songwriter, and entrepreneur from Tema. Sarkodie began rapping at a young age and has since become a prominent figure in both the Ghanaian and global music scenes. His remarkable contributions to the industry have earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious “Artiste of the Decade” award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

In 2019, he made history as the first recipient of BET’s Best International Flow Artist award. Sarkodie is also recognized as a key figure in the Azonto genre and dance movement, and he is often hailed as one of Africa’s most successful rappers. Known for his versatility, Sarkodie frequently raps in Twi, his native language, adding a unique touch to his multifaceted style.

2019: Alpha and Black Love

In June 2019, Sarkodie released his debut extended play (EP) Alpha, a six-track project featuring Joey B and the late Ebony Reigns. Later that year, on December 20, he dropped his fifth studio album, Black Love, featuring a star-studded lineup including Mr Eazi, Efya, Idris Elba, Stonebwoy, Tekno, and Kizz Daniel. The album was supported by hits such as “Party & Bullshit,” “Saara,” “Do You,” and “Can’t Let Go.” In an interview with OkayAfrica, Sarkodie explained that Black Love explored themes of love and relationships within the Black community.

2021: No Pressure

Sarkodie followed up in 2021 with his seventh studio album, No Pressure, which was officially released on July 30. The album boasted collaborations with international artists like Wale, Vic Mensa, Giggs, Cassper Nyovest, and Oxlade, further cementing his status as a global icon.

2022: Jamz Album

In late 2022, Sarkodie dropped his Jamz album, which featured collaborations with artists like Black Sherif, King Promise, and several top Nigerian acts. The hit tracks “Labadi” featuring King Promise and “Countryside” with Black Sherif became fan favorites, with the latter winning Best Collaboration at the 2023 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards.

2023: Jamz World Tour

In September 2023, Sarkodie announced his Jamz World Tour, during which he performed across Africa and Europe, captivating audiences in countries such as the UK, France, Sweden, and Germany. Although his tour was largely successful, Sarkodie missed his Detroit show due to an emergency landing in Portugal, for which he blamed Delta Airlines.

Accolades and Legacy

Sarkodie’s status as one of Africa’s top hip-hop artists is well established. He was ranked sixth on MTV Base’s list of Hottest African MCs in 2014, and in 2013, Lynx TV named him the greatest Ghanaian rapper of all time. Over the years, he has secured high rankings on various lists of top African rappers and has been featured in Forbes’ Top 10 Richest/Bankable African Artistes.

In 2020, Sarkodie won the “Artiste of the Year” award at the Ghana Music Awards USA. Internationally, he has collaborated with artists such as E-40, Ace Hood, and Jidenna.

Philanthropy and Business Ventures

In 2013, Sarkodie launched The Sarkodie Foundation, a non-profit focused on supporting underprivileged children. The foundation’s charitable work includes donations to orphanages and the “Feed the Kids” campaign in Tema, which benefited thousands of children.

On the business front, Sarkodie launched his clothing line, Sark by Yas, in 2013. He has also signed numerous endorsement deals with major brands such as Samsung, FanMilk Ghana, Tigo Telecommunications, Standard Chartered Bank, and Guinness Ghana. He was appointed an ambassador for Ghana’s Year of Return campaign in 2019 and has been involved in high-profile campaigns such as Pepsodent’s #BrushWithMe initiative.

Personal Life

Sarkodie married Tracy in a private ceremony in Tema, Ghana, on July 17, 2018. The couple has two children. In interviews, Sarkodie has discussed how his childhood experiences, including being separated from his parents, shaped his introverted and observant nature.

Controversies

Shatta Wale Feud: Sarkodie and dancehall artist Shatta Wale were once close collaborators, but their relationship soured over a business disagreement. Shatta Wale frequently criticized Sarkodie, who eventually responded with the diss track “Advice.” In August 2023, Shatta Wale claimed that a GLO endorsement deal triggered their fallout.

Yvonne Nelson: In her memoir I Am Not Yvonne Nelson, actress Yvonne Nelson revealed that she had a past relationship with Sarkodie, which resulted in an unplanned pregnancy. Sarkodie later responded with the song “Try Me,” in which he denied pressuring Nelson to terminate the pregnancy, attributing the decision to her educational goals.

Samini: In January 2023, dancehall star Samini accused Sarkodie of ignoring his request for a collaboration. Sarkodie later apologized publicly, expressing that any miscommunication was unintentional.

Near-Death Experience

On September 9, 2023, Sarkodie had a near-death experience when a Delta Airlines flight he was on made an emergency landing on a remote island in Portugal. The incident cast a dark cloud over his otherwise triumphant year.
