Spotted: Big Zulu


South African rapper and songwriter Siyabonga Nene, better known by his stage name Big Zulu, rose to fame with the release of his hit single “Donsa Nkabi” in 2016. In addition to his successful music career, Big Zulu has made a name for himself in acting, featuring in popular South African TV series like Isibaya, One Mic, and Uzalo.


In 2020, he gained widespread acclaim with the hit song “Mali Eningi,” which featured the late award-winning rapper Riky Rick and Intaba Yase Dubai.
Early Life and Influences
Born on April 7, 1986, in Bergville, South Africa, Big Zulu’s musical journey was deeply influenced by Maskandi and Isichathamiya genres. Growing up, he was inspired by legends like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Phuzekemizi, and Imithente. Before stepping into the music industry, he worked as a taxi driver.

Rise to Stardom
Big Zulu signed his first major music contract with Universal Music in 2015. His debut album, Ushun Wenkabi, was released in 2018 and featured the platinum-selling single “Vuma Dlozi.” His second album, Ungqongqoshe Woongqongqoshe (2019), included the chart-topping single “Ama Million,” which reached number 5 on the iTunes chart and earned him a South African Music Award nomination in 2020.

He continued his musical success with the massive hit “Mali Eningi,” further solidifying his status as one of South Africa’s top rappers.


Inkabi Records
Big Zulu also founded Inkabi Records, a platform that has helped promote several upcoming artists. Among those signed to the label is popular South African singer Mduduzi Ncube.

Personal Life
Big Zulu is in a relationship with Lebogang Makenete, and the couple shares a daughter. However, their relationship has experienced difficulties. In 2018, Big Zulu was arrested for allegedly assaulting his partner. During their separation, he had a relationship with PR guru Bulelwa Nazo, with whom he shares a son named Shaka.
