Election 2024: EC Clarifies Timeline for Revised Voter Register Release

The Electoral Commission (EC) has clarified that it did not commit to providing the revised provisional voters register to political parties within a week during the recent Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting on October 1.

In a statement signed by Samuel Tettey, the Deputy Chair of the Commission in charge of Operations, the EC responded to claims by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that it would deliver the voters register within a week following the meeting. The EC stated that this assertion does not accurately reflect the discussions held.

After a meeting of its Functional Executives Committee, the NDC expressed its expectation to receive the updated voters register within a week, indicating that it would announce its next steps regarding the audit of the register.

“The Functional Executive Committee of the NDC has deliberated and decided to accept the EC’s commitment to provide political parties with the corrected and updated version of the 2024 Provisional Voters Register for scrutiny within one week,” the NDC stated following their meeting.

However, the EC clarified that Chairperson Jean Mensa did not make such a promise during the meeting. The Commission noted that she stated during the televised IPAC meeting that the revised provisional voters register would be provided to political parties and uploaded online within two weeks or sooner.

The EC emphasized that the errors identified by the NDC have been largely rectified.

“We have demonstrated that the EC has established reliable processes to produce a credible register, ensuring free, fair, and transparent elections. The anomalies that have been pointed out have been addressed. The register is now clean, robust, and prepared for Election 2024,” assured Dr. Yaw Ofori-Adjei, the EC’s Director of IT.
