Reminisce: “Fame is a Hard Drug, Very Intoxicating”

Nigerian rapper Remilekun Abdulkhalid Safaru, widely known as Reminisce, has likened fame to a hard drug, describing it as highly intoxicating.

During an interview with Naija FM in Lagos, the ‘Alaga Ibile’ hitmaker reflected on the pressures of fame. “Fame is a hard drug. It’s very intoxicating,” he remarked.

When asked how he navigates the challenges that come with his celebrity status, Reminisce revealed that he maintains a cautious approach to relationships. “I operate with the mindset that nobody is my friend,” he explained, adding that he views people as colleagues rather than friends. This perspective, he said, helps him manage expectations and avoid disappointments.

The rapper recently released his much-anticipated extended play (EP) titled Sui Generis, which means “of its own kind” or “unique” in Latin. The seven-track project features a host of talented artists, including Vector, Bad Boy Timz, Logos Olori, Bard Banks, BhadBoi OML, Easyscope, and Lucid. Tracks on the EP include ‘Kupe,’ ‘Ire,’ ‘Up As F**k,’ ‘The Ultimate,’ ‘Owo,’ ‘Scopatumana,’ and ‘Backshots.’

Renowned for his versatility as a rapper, singer, songwriter, and actor, Reminisce hails from Ogun State and delivers his art in both English and Yoruba, his native language. He first gained attention in 2008 with his memorable rap verse on 9ice’s Gongo Aso album. Over the years, he has established himself as a major force in the Nigerian music industry, with early singles like ‘Ever Since’ and ‘If Only’ propelling him into the limelight.

In addition to his musical achievements, Reminisce has ventured into acting, making his debut in the acclaimed film King of Boys, directed by Kemi Adetiba. His contributions to the entertainment industry have earned him numerous accolades, and in 2014, Time magazine named him one of the “Seven World Rappers You Should Meet.”

Reminisce is also the founder of Les Roses Rouge (LRR) Records, a label that nurtures rising talent in the Nigerian music scene.
