Catholic Archdiocese to Host Prayer Walk Against Galamsey

On October 11, 2024, Catholic priests in Accra will conduct a prayer walk to protest illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. The event will kick off at 10 AM, beginning at the Cathedral and concluding at Christ the King Parish.

This prayer walk is part of a broader initiative to raise awareness about the harmful effects of galamsey on Ghana’s water bodies and forest reserves. The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra is spearheading this effort, calling on Ghanaians from diverse backgrounds to unite in prayer and action against this environmental crisis.

Priests are encouraged to arrange transportation for their parishioners and will announce details during church services on October 6, 2024, to promote participation. More than 50 organizations that have previously raised concerns about illegal mining are anticipated to join the protest, merging prayer with public demonstrations to demand an end to the devastation inflicted by galamsey.

The event aims to highlight the pressing need for collective action to address environmental damage and safeguard Ghana’s natural resources.
