Why FIFA Banned Cameroon Legend Samuel Eto’o and the Charges He Faces

Samuel Eto’o, the legendary Cameroonian footballer and current president of the Cameroon Football Association (FECAFOOT), has been banned by FIFA for six months due to misconduct. The 43-year-old has been sanctioned for violating rules related to offensive behavior and breaching principles of fair play.

FIFA announced the ban on Monday, September 30, citing Eto’o’s actions during the recent Under-20 Women’s World Cup, particularly during a match between Cameroon and Brazil. According to the statement, Eto’o’s conduct at the event went against FIFA’s disciplinary codes, prompting the governing body to take action.

The ban, which became effective immediately, bars Eto’o from attending any matches involving Cameroon’s national football teams, whether men’s or women’s, across all age categories. This includes not only senior-level games but also youth competitions.

FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee issued a detailed statement regarding the matter, which read: “The sanction was imposed in connection with the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup™ round-of-16 match between Brazil and Cameroon played in Bogotá, Colombia, on 11 September 2024. The ban imposed on Mr Eto’o prevents him from attending men’s and women’s matches involving FECAFOOT teams of all categories and age groups. Mr Eto’o has been notified today, the date on which the sanction comes into force.”

This is not Eto’o’s first controversy. In the past, he faced allegations of threatening players and Cameroon’s coach, Marc Brys. Additionally, during the Qatar World Cup in 2022, Eto’o was caught in an incident where he assaulted a fan outside the stadium. These past incidents have raised concerns about his conduct in public and sporting spaces.

In a separate, lighthearted football moment, Eto’o once made headlines for signaling for the substitution of Nigerian football legend Jay-Jay Okocha during a friendly match. Okocha, then 42, was performing exceptionally well and entertaining the crowd with his signature dribbles and no-look passes, which led Eto’o to jokingly suggest that the opposition bench take him off.

As Eto’o faces these charges, his legacy remains complex, marked by both his incredible contributions to football and recent controversies.
