Players Who Delayed Decision Before World Cup Qualifiers May Only Feature in Friendlies – Edem Agbana

Member of Parliament for Ketu North and a key figure in Ghana’s sports development, Hon. Edem Agbana, has revealed that some players who were approached to join the national team before the World Cup qualifiers but requested more time to decide may not make it to the Mundial itself. Instead, they might only get the chance to feature in international friendly matches.
Speaking on Sporty Breakfast, Edem Agbana explained that while the technical team had shown interest in several players ahead of the qualifiers, some of those targets hesitated or delayed their commitment to the national cause. According to him, timing and loyalty play a crucial role in national team selection and those who held back might have missed their window.
“The players we approached before the World Cup qualifiers who asked us for more time to decide may join the squad for international friendlies, not the Mundial,” he stated.
Agbana’s comments shed light on the delicate balance between player readiness and national team planning. The World Cup qualifiers demand consistency and commitment, and the technical handlers are said to be prioritizing those who showed readiness from the start.
He added that while the door to the national team is never completely closed, selection for the World Cup itself requires not only skill but also dedication and early commitment to the team’s vision.
This statement has stirred conversation among football fans, with many debating whether players who delay their decisions should still be considered for major tournaments. Others believe that every top-performing player deserves a fair chance, regardless of past hesitation.
As Ghana continues preparations for both the qualifiers and subsequent friendlies, Edem Agbana’s remarks serve as a reminder that representing the country goes beyond talent, it also demands timing, trust, and full commitment.
