‘Wicked’ Breaks Records with $70M in First-Week Premium VOD Sales

Universal Pictures has announced record-breaking numbers for Jon M. Chu’s Wicked in its premium video-on-demand (PVOD) debut. The movie-musical amassed over $70 million in the U.S. and Canada during its first week of home release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda, Wicked generated an impressive $26 million on Dec. 31, the first day of its PVOD release. These figures set new records for Universal, surpassing the previous benchmark held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $44 million in its first week on PVOD.
The film remains available for purchase and rental on platforms like Amazon Prime and Apple TV, priced at $29.99 and $19.99, respectively.
Meanwhile, Wicked continues to thrive at the global box office. As of Jan. 5, the film has raked in $681.3 million worldwide since its theatrical release on Nov. 22, surpassing Mamma Mia!’s $611.5 million to become the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical.
The success of Wicked was further highlighted at the 2025 Golden Globes, where it received the award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. Fans can look forward to its sequel, Wicked: For Good, which is slated to hit theaters on Nov. 21, 2025.
