Presidential Candidates Urged to Commit to Anti-Galamsey Pact – GCAG

The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey (GCAG) has called on all presidential candidates contesting the 2024 elections to sign a National Pledge Against Illegal and Irresponsible Mining.

This initiative, launched in collaboration with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and other civic organizations, seeks to affirm political resolve to combat illegal mining, which has wreaked havoc on the nation’s waterbodies, forests, and public health.

“The pledge represents a collective commitment to addressing one of Ghana’s most critical environmental challenges,” the GCAG stated. “By signing, candidates will demonstrate their leadership and political will to end galamsey while mobilizing collective action to protect the environment for future generations.”

The Coalition stressed the importance of cooperation among political leaders, civil society, traditional authorities, and local communities in the fight against illegal mining. “This effort requires all hands on deck,” they emphasized, noting that the pledge would lay the foundation for a new social contract centered on environmental accountability and stewardship.

To maintain transparency, the GCAG has scheduled a press conference for Thursday, December 5, 2024, at the International Press Centre. During the event, they will announce the list of candidates who have endorsed the pledge. The Coalition has also called on media outlets to amplify the initiative by covering the event.
