Splitting his time between Ghana and Los Angeles, Dawuni’s music has become an international bridge, spreading messages of unity, resilience, and hope.

Dawuni’s passion for Reggae began in his youth, inspired by a military band playing a Bob Marley song in Michel Camp, the military barracks where he grew up in Ghana. Driven by this early experience, he developed his own musical identity, launching his career and creating the annual “Independence Splash” festival in Ghana, held each March 6 to commemorate the country’s independence.

Over his career, Dawuni has released eight full-length albums. His sixth album, Branches of the Same Tree (2015), made history by earning a Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album, marking Ghana’s first-ever Grammy nomination. Songlines Magazine named it one of the top 10 essential reggae albums of all time, with Dawuni’s soulful influences from Fela Kuti and Bob Marley shining through each track.

In 2019, Dawuni released Beats of Zion, featuring collaborations with Ghanaian dancehall star Stonebwoy. The album’s final single, “Champion Arise,” was spotlighted as “Top Tune of the Day” on KCRW, one of NPR’s leading radio stations. That same year, he also released the single “Modern Man,” remixed by Gaudi, showcasing his evolving global appeal.

Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1, released in 2020, earned Dawuni another Grammy nomination in 2022 for Best Global Music Album. The album’s singles, including “Ghost Town” and “Beautiful People,” captured powerful visuals and heartfelt stories, with filming in Dawuni’s home village of Bunbon and direction by notable cinematographers like Casey Bridges and Slingshot.

In September 2021, Dawuni released the music video for “Woara” (“You” in Twi), a love song that celebrates Ghanaian culture through call-and-response vocals in the Akan dialect. His song “Neva Bow Down” featuring Blvk H3ro brought him a third Grammy nomination in 2022, solidifying his status as a global musical ambassador.

In 2024, Dawuni released the single Rise, adding to his ever-expanding discography, which includes:

The Movement (1996)

Crusade (1998)

Awakening (2001)

Book of Changes (2005)

Hymns for the Rebel Soul (2010)

Branches of the Same Tree (2015)

Beats of Zion (2019)

Voice of Bunbon Vol. 1 (2020)

Dawuni’s music videos, from “Walk The Talk” (2010) to “Shade Tree” (2023), reveal his commitment to both artistry and social change, often working with prominent directors to bring his messages to life.

Beyond his musical contributions, Dawuni serves as a voice for African and Afro-descendant culture on international stages, such as COP26 in Scotland and the World Day of African & Afrodescendant Culture in Ghana, solidifying his role as a global ambassador for unity, peace, and environmental awareness.
