Meet ZULO: The Trailblazing Hitmaker Redefining South African Hip Hop

“Come on, ZULO…” That catchy tagline has become synonymous with Johannesburg rapper and music producer ZULO, and it’s hard to miss when it echoes through any track featuring his unmistakable style.
Born Zunaid Lombard, the 30-year-old rising star grew up in the south of Johannesburg. His artistic journey began early, experimenting with filmmaking, video game design, graphic design, poetry, and music by the age of 11.
My first introduction to ZULO’s music came through Dali Danger’s track “Be Free” last year. Since then, I’ve explored his growing discography, with standout tracks like “Jol” and “Adawise” solidifying his presence in the South African hip hop scene.
ZULO’s latest single, “Smaak To Love (Lamza),” arrived unexpectedly in my inbox, offering a refreshing reintroduction to the versatile artist. The accompanying music video is playful and vibrant, cleverly referencing modern dating culture, where an Instagram like can spark a deeper connection between two strangers.
“I wanted it to be cute, fun, and easy to digest,” ZULO explains. “Sometimes, we just want to enjoy something without thinking too hard. This video was about capturing that lighthearted vibe—something that makes you smile as you watch.”
As ZULO prepares for the release of his debut album, he’s been steadily dropping singles, each offering a glimpse into his evolving sound. Drawing inspiration from Kwaito, Afrobeats, pop, and even 70s and 80s disco, ZULO is experimenting with different styles to craft a uniquely South African sound.
“For me, it’s about showcasing what I can do as an artist, especially with the sound I’m creating,” he says. “We’re figuring out what South African music looks like to the rest of the world and finding a texture that’s uniquely ours. Each single I’ve released so far shows a different side of me.”
ZULO’s mission goes beyond music. He’s also focused on representing and educating through his work, using his platform to spotlight the Coloured identity in South Africa. “I want my music to speak to a larger message—what South Africa is,” he adds.
With his debut album three years in the making, ZULO isn’t rushing the process. “This album is going to be historic. It’ll be a statement, something that belongs in museums. I’m aiming to create timeless, monumental music.”
Working closely with producers like Spice Drums and Zambia’s Liss Landers, ZULO is honing the texture of his sound, and he’s also collaborating with artists like Flow Jones for the project. As for the album’s release, he’s eyeing next year to unveil his much-anticipated masterpiece.
ZULO is clearly on a mission to redefine South African hip hop—one groundbreaking single at a time.
