From Rap to the Road: Pope Skinny Pursues New Career as Truck Driver in the US

Ghanaian rapper Pope Skinny has embarked on a new journey, leaving behind the challenges of the music industry to start a fresh chapter as a truck driver in the United States. In a candid interview with Nana Romeo on Accra FM on October 9, 2024, the rapper shared his reasons for the switch, citing the lack of financial security for musicians in Ghana.

“Our job doesn’t even come with SSNIT,” Pope Skinny pointed out, referring to the Social Security and National Insurance Trust. He highlighted how many creatives struggle financially in their later years, not because of irresponsibility, but due to the system’s failure to provide long-term support. “That’s why you see so many artists asking for help when they get older.”

Encouraging younger artists to think ahead, he advised them to consider opportunities abroad where social security systems are more reliable. “If you don’t have a hit song, you’ll go hungry,” he warned, adding that the decision to relocate has allowed him to secure his future.

Pope Skinny also criticized the Food and Drugs Authority’s ban on celebrity endorsements of alcohol, arguing that it limits the earning potential for creatives in Ghana.

“I’m driving a big truck in America now,” he said. “I couldn’t do this in Ghana without being mocked.”
