Byno Ayoni: Overcoming Rejection in the Music Industry Due to Albinism and Poor Eyesight

Byno Ayoni, winner of Mentor 12, has shared some of the obstacles he’s faced throughout his music career, many of which stem from societal misconceptions about albinism.
In a candid interview with DJ Slim on Daybreak Hitz, Byno revealed that his albinism has cost him numerous opportunities within the music industry. Despite his talent and determination, he explained that he was often turned down after auditions because of his appearance.
“I’ve attended several auditions and performed well, only to be told later that I don’t look ‘marketable’ because I’m an albino. They also cited concerns about my eyesight, claiming I wouldn’t be able to perform at night due to the vision challenges associated with albinism,” he recounted.
Despite these setbacks, Byno remains resolute in his pursuit of success. He noted that as more people begin to appreciate his talent, the stigma surrounding his condition is gradually fading. His victory on TV3’s Mentor is a testament to his confidence and resilience.
Now signed to Edem Goget’em’s Volta Regime Music Group, Byno is making waves with songs like “I Dey Like” and various collaborations with his mentor, Edem.
Albinism, particularly in Africa, is often shrouded in dangerous myths and misconceptions. This has led to widespread discrimination against individuals living with the condition, and in extreme cases, even violence. Some traditional cultures view albinism as a bad omen, leading to horrific practices such as kidnapping and murder.
The struggles Byno faces echo those of Malian musician Salif Keita, who was ostracized from his community due to his albinism. Keita moved to Côte d’Ivoire, Paris, London, and New York, where he found greater freedom and opportunities to develop his musical career. After achieving international success, Keita returned to Mali and established the Salif Keita Global Foundation to combat the stigma surrounding albinism.
Like Keita, Byno Ayoni is determined to use his platform to advocate for the inclusion of people with albinism in all aspects of society. He is leveraging his growing influence to raise awareness and challenge stereotypes.
In the meantime, Byno has released his latest track, “Stand Firm,” a collaboration with his mentor Edem, as he continues his journey in the music industry.
