Kofi Nti Commits to Perform Daddy Lumba’s Songs to Preserve His Legacy
Highlife musician Kofi Nti has pledged to honour the memory of the late music icon Daddy Lumba by performing three of his songs at every show. The “Rakia” hitmaker says the move is his personal way of preserving Lumba’s enduring legacy and acknowledging the immense influence the legendary artiste had on his career.
Speaking to Graphic Showbiz during the one-week observance of Daddy Lumba at Independence Square in Accra on Saturday, August 30, Kofi Nti said, “Everybody knows Daddy Lumba inspired my music career. His style and how he sings encouraged me a lot. I intend to keep his legacy by performing his three songs anytime I mount the stage.”
He added that this commitment would help ensure Lumba’s music continues to be celebrated for generations to come.
The one-week observance began at 10:15 a.m. with a prayer led by Prophet Amoako Atta of Parliament Chapel. Among those who arrived at the grounds to pay their respects were Lumba’s first wife, Akosua Serwaa, who was ushered in with traditional songs, followed by his second wife, Odo Broni.
Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta near Mampong in the Ashanti Region, passed away at the Bank Hospital in Accra on Saturday, July 26, 2025. He was 60.
Who Was Daddy Lumba?
Lumba began his music journey at the age of 16, leading the Juaben Secondary School choir in 1983. After secondary school, he formed the Lumba Brothers group with friends Yaw, Kwabena, and his then-girlfriend Theresa Abebrese. With Theresa’s support, he later travelled to Germany, where he met fellow highlife musician Ernest “Nana” Acheampong.
Together, they revived the Lumba Brothers and released their debut album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu, which launched their careers. Although they eventually pursued solo paths, Daddy Lumba went on to establish himself as one of Ghana’s most celebrated musicians, renowned for his timeless highlife compositions and unmatched influence on the music industry.
