Dr. Bawumia Undertakes Umrah Pilgrimage Following President Mahama’s Inauguration

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate in the 2024 election, has embarked on an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca. Accompanied by his wife, Hajia Samira Bawumia, and close associates, including former Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, the trip serves as a moment of spiritual reflection and gratitude.

The pilgrimage follows the January 7, 2025, inauguration of President John Dramani Mahama, who defeated Dr. Bawumia in the December 7, 2024, presidential election. Running on the NPP ticket, Dr. Bawumia faced off against Mr. Mahama, who represented the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

In a heartfelt social media post, Dr. Bawumia expressed his reasons for undertaking the spiritual journey. “Together with Hajia Samira Bawumia and some friends, I arrived in Mecca yesterday to perform Umrah (Islamic Pilgrimage to Mecca). This is to thank the Almighty Allah for His grace. We also prayed for guidance and protection for us and for our nation, Ghana,” he shared.

Dr. Bawumia, who attended President Mahama’s inauguration, also used the opportunity to thank his supporters for their dedication during the election campaign. His pilgrimage marks a moment of spiritual renewal as he looks ahead to the future.

About Umrah

Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year, unlike the Hajj pilgrimage, which has specific dates in the Islamic lunar calendar. Though not mandatory, Umrah holds great spiritual significance for Muslims and is highly recommended for those who are able to perform it.

During Umrah, pilgrims perform a series of sacred rituals:

Ihram: Pilgrims wear white garments to symbolize purity and unity before entering Mecca.

Tawaf: Pilgrims walk around the Kaaba, Islam’s holiest site, seven times in a counter-clockwise direction.

Sa’i: Pilgrims walk back and forth seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, reenacting the actions of Hagar, the wife of Prophet Ibrahim, as she searched for water for her son, Ismail.

Shaving or Trimming Hair: Male pilgrims shave or trim their hair, while females cut a small portion as a symbolic act of humility and renewal.

While it is considered a “lesser pilgrimage” compared to Hajj, Umrah offers profound spiritual rewards and an opportunity for Muslims to draw closer to Allah.
