Sister Derby Reflects on Job Search Challenges in the UK and Her Decision to Move Back to Ghana

Ghanaian socialite and singer Sister Derby has opened up about the hurdles she faced while job hunting after earning her master’s degree in the United Kingdom. In a candid interview with 3 Music TV, the “Kakalila Love” artist discussed the difficulties she encountered after losing a £700 internship, which significantly impacted her job search.
Despite applying to numerous positions, Sister Derby found it hard to land a job. “I applied for so many jobs, but I couldn’t get one,” she stated. Seeking guidance from one of her professors, she learned that the recession in the UK meant that employers were favoring local candidates over international applicants.
Sister Derby attended multiple interviews at prominent publishing firms but was met with disappointment as no offers came through. Additionally, her efforts to register with various job agencies did not yield any callbacks, leading her to ultimately decide to return to Ghana.
Though she eventually received help from a Nigerian colleague who secured her a job as a salesperson at one of the largest pharmacies in the UK, she felt the role was beneath her qualifications as a master’s graduate and chose to resign.
This experience solidified her resolve to return to Ghana in search of better opportunities. “When I decided to come back to Ghana and look for a job here, I happened to be on the last Ghana Airwaves flight, I think sometime in January 2010,” she shared.
