Akua GMB Reflects on Early Marriage Regret

Sally Akua Amoakowaa, widely recognized as Akua GMB and a former winner of Ghana’s Most Beautiful pageant, recently opened up about her regrets over marrying at a young age.
In a candid interview, Akua shared that if she could turn back time, she would reconsider her decision to marry at just 22. Reflecting on her experiences, she believes her youthful marriage prevented her from fully discovering herself and enjoying the freedom to explore life independently.
“If I could change one thing about my life from ten years ago, it would be my decision to marry so young. I sometimes feel I married too early, at 22. Back then, I hadn’t figured out who I was, hadn’t explored the world, and didn’t know myself well enough to make such a commitment,” she expressed.
As the CEO of Jewel Fashion, Akua clarified that she doesn’t discourage young women from marrying early, but she urges them to first take time to understand themselves and the responsibilities that come with marriage.
“If a woman feels she knows herself, understands what she’s committing to, and is prepared for the journey, then by all means, go ahead and marry,” she advised.
Akua GMB married Dr. Kweku Oteng shortly after winning the 2011 Ghana’s Most Beautiful crown. The marriage lasted nearly eight years, ending in 2019, and the couple has three children together.
