Security Taskforce Confirms Preparedness for December Elections

The National Elections Security Taskforce has assured the West African Elders Forum, led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, of heightened security measures for the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7 in Ghana.
The West African Elders Forum, comprising distinguished individuals such as former heads of state and government, aims to mediate electoral and democratic conflicts in the region.
At a meeting held yesterday at the Police Headquarters in Accra, Inspector General of Police Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who chairs the Taskforce, expressed confidence in the readiness of security agencies for the elections. He explained that security protocols established from previous elections have been integrated into the country’s overall security strategy, ensuring comprehensive management for election security.
Dr. Dampare acknowledged the history of electoral violence but pointed to the recent successful conduct of district assembly elections, by-elections, and internal party elections as evidence of improved security management by law enforcement. He emphasized the importance of collaboration among the Electoral Commission (EC), political parties, and the public in promoting electoral security, calling for continued cooperation among all stakeholders.
In his remarks, Mr. Jonathan highlighted the essential roles of the EC and security agencies in facilitating peaceful elections. He stated, “While the involvement of all citizens is crucial, the success of any election relies significantly on the electoral management body, like the EC, and the security agencies.” He urged both institutions to reinforce public confidence by ensuring effective security measures and transparent electoral processes.
Mr. Jonathan praised Ghana for its track record of conducting peaceful elections since it became a Republic and encouraged the nation to uphold its democratic principles.
He noted that the presence of the West African Elders Forum in Ghana is intended not only for observation but also for preventive diplomacy, aiming to ensure that the December 7 elections proceed smoothly. He warned that any conflict arising from the elections could have repercussions for neighboring countries within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
With confidence in the taskforce’s capabilities, Mr. Jonathan expressed optimism that the security services will successfully manage the electoral process before, during, and after the elections.
